The Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was founded in 1837. Four years earlier, in 1833, medical education in Greece took place through the “Iatrosynedrio” (Congress of Medicine). Meanwhile in 1835 the “Theoretical and Practical Teaching Department of Surgery and Pharmacy of the Medical School” was in operation. The first dean of the Medical School, while the studies lasted for only 3 years, was Dr. Anastasios Lefkias. Since then, 35 Deans have been in office.
The Faculty of Medicine consists of 6 Main Departments:
- Morphologic-functional,
- Clinical-laboratorial,
- Internal Medicine,
- Surgery,
- Mother & Child Health,
- Social Medicine- Psychiatry and Neurology.
Inside the Medical School, apart from the different Clinics and Labs, there are also several Research Centres such as:
- Tetrapoleos Street Building,
- Experimental Operating Centre,
- special Units and Departments.
A few years ago, with the construction of the new University Hospital “Attikon”, many clinics and labs were moved to this new state-of-theart facility, as well as more departments that were needed were created.
Another great activity of Athens Medical School is its annual Scientific Congress with over 500 participants, where more than 300 scientific papers are presented every year. Moreover, many educational seminars and lectures are organized on annual basis, as well as special seminars about different medical specialties.
The Medical School of Athens is the largest Medical Faculty in Greece with more than 3.500 medical students.
Recently, in 2007, the Medical School of Athens celebrated its 170th Anniversary with a memorable event organized at the Athens Music Hall. The Prime Minister of Greece and the President of the Hellenic Republic attended this event, as well as many past Rectors of the NKUA and Deans of the Medical School.
