All Local Committees of HelMSIC (each one situated at city with a medical faculty) joined EMSA (European Medical Students’ Association) in 2000 and since then, the 7 Greek FMOs participate in all EMSA annual meetings (EMSA NCM, EMSA GA).
The European Medical Students’ Association was founded in 1991 in Brussels with the goal to unite medical students from all around geographical Europe. It offers a forum for exchange of ideas, beliefs and experiences and it takes action in matters concerning Medical Education, Medical Science, Medical Ethics and European Integration.
HelMSIC takes part actively in all the actions of EMSA: in 2004 HelMSIC organized the 14th General Assembly of EMSA in Thessaloniki and in 2008 HelMSIC hosted the 5th EMS Council in Athens.
EMS Council 5 "Doctor & Patient Relationship: in front of terminally-ill patients"
Terminal diagnosis changes the very structure of our existence, takes away our control and our ability to hope and plan for the future. When a patient is given a terminal illness, even doctors become painfully aware of the fragility of life. There are four main areas of care for those who are coping with dying - physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. Each one were analysed in special lectures and workshops during the EMS Council meeting, in May 2008 in Athens. The 5th EMS Council meeting was hosted by HelMSIC-Athens under the auspices of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the NKUA Medical School and was supported by the General Staff of Greek Airforce, the Ecclesia of Greece (Greek Orthodox Church) and the Medical Association of Athens.
